Heart Essay

Heart Essay is a musical instrument where each letter of the alphabet corresponds with a sound. A compilation of phrases (they are excerpts from e-mails, conversations and thoughts centering on a lesbian relationship I had in London) merge reality with fiction to produce a Utopia. Historically feminist writers have used Utopian techniques, expressing their ways of seeing as fiction, because men cannot conceive these views as a reality. Utopias can be an easier way to integrate new ways of thinking into society.
The fictional aspect can buffer any shock or resistance that may arise from more confrontational ways of giving political information (i.e. manifesto).

Since I started producing digital art, I've been carrying a type of logic (stream of thought/association) through all of my work including writing. I've started focusing on grammatical structures and how fractured, pieced together digital logic ends up poetic when applied to words. I've noticed a resemblance between the

broken English of a person who isn't proficient with the language and what happens when I try to create a grammatical structure with programs/systems. One of the main hurdles of being able to simulate the spoken English language is to recreate the emotions, connotations and grammatical structures that arise from lived/shared experiences. I'm trying to
create emotion in this new media. Most of my work focuses on cultivating new ways of interfacing with the computer. Each new way of interaction is meant to be seen as a new form of sensory perception, which is what life is
about to me.
