Detroit resident Alex Montaner, 32, is a community activist who has been able to curb gang violence in the city. Montaner has reached out to many of Detroit's troubled youths who are involved in gangs and introduced them to positive alternatives such as job opportunities. Also Montaner helped negotiate a truce between two warring gangs and encouraged gang members to help him clean up graffiti. Even President Clinton's staff has contacted Montaner for information about the gang truce and other things going on in the community.
